Leaders and Advocates from Across California Support Lara’s Re-Election Bid, Saying he is “On Our Side” in Fighting for Consumer Protections

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Lara for Insurance Commissioner Campaign is proud to announce the launch of his re-election campaign with supporters from across the state as he continues to fight on behalf of California consumers.

“I’m committed to holding insurance companies accountable to consumers and making sure that everyone gets a fair shake, especially in times of crisis,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “Californians have been dealing with unprecedented devastation, whether dealing with the fallout of a global pandemic, recurring wildfires or fighting for the health care they need during difficult times. I look forward to continuing the fight for stronger consumer rights. I want all Californians to know: I’m on your side.”

With many Californians left reeling in the wake of devastating wildfires, Commissioner Lara has fought for fire victims as they try to rebuild their lives.

“Ricardo Lara has stood up for families and communities that have been devastated by wildfires, and has a long history of supporting firefighters who are often on the front lines in a natural disaster,” said Brian Rice, President of the California Professional Firefighters. “He’s on our side, and I stand with him to support his re-election to another term as our state’s Insurance Commissioner.”

Lara has also been a leading advocate for expanding health care to all Californians.

“There’s been no stronger ally than Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara in our fight to expand health care coverage for all,” said Alma Hernández, Executive Director for SEIU California. “We’re grateful for his leadership on this issue and look forward to working with him to provide equity in health care. He’s been on our side, and we are staunchly on his.”

Lara protected more than 2.4 million policyholders from non-renewal following declared wildfire disasters in 2019. He also created the nation’s first Climate & Sustainability branch within the Department of Insurance.

“Through flood, drought and wildfire, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has been on our side at some of our most difficult times.” said Joy Sterling, Chair of the California Democratic Party Rural Caucus. “I’m proud to support his re-election as he continues to help fight climate change and hold the insurance industry accountable for all Californians.”

Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has fought to protect California consumers and a competitive marketplace. A champion for access to quality health care and consumer rights, Lara has worked on legislation and national programs that improve the quality of life for all Californians.

“Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has been on our side and advocating for people with HIV and AIDS throughout his time in office,” said HIV/AIDS advocate Janet Parker who works for a community clinic. “He sponsored the Equal Insurance HIV Act that was signed into law by Governor Newsom to stop insurance companies from denying coverage based on HIV status. His leadership has changed the way insurers address HIV/AIDS patients, which is a huge burden lifted.”

Lara has also advocated for equitable treatment of all patients and consumers, no matter their diagnosis or background.

“Insurance Commissioner Lara has demonstrated time and again that he is a fierce champion for the HIV community,” said HIV/AIDS advocate Craig Pulsipher. “His leadership has been instrumental in rolling back discriminatory HIV laws and making it easier to access medications that prevent HIV. I look forward to continuing to work with him to end the HIV epidemic in California.”
