California’s Powerful Women Leaders Rally In Support of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara For Re-election

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Ricardo Lara for Insurance Commissioner Campaign is proud to announce strong support from California’s powerful women leaders, including: Eleni Kounalakis, Lieutenant Governor of California, Toni Atkins, California State Senate President Pro Tempore, Jodi Hicks, CEO & President of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, Judy Chu, U.S. Representative, María Elena Durazo, California State Senator, and Holly Mitchell, Los Angeles County Supervisor.

“Ricardo Lara has been a staunch defender of the California dream because he is a product of it,” said Eleni Kounalakis, Lieutenant Governor of California. “A champion for access to quality health care and consumer rights, Ricardo has worked on legislation and national programs that improve the quality of life for all Californians. I’m proud to endorse his re-election campaign.”

“Throughout his career, Ricardo Lara has been a champion for healthcare, affordable housing, education, women, wildfire relief, and the LGBTQ community,” said Toni Atkins, California State Senate President Pro Tempore. “Ricardo never stops fighting for working people – his work reflects that and continues to be instrumental for the people of California. I’m proud to support him for re-election.”

“Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has been a champion for women’s and reproductive rights his entire career and continues to stand side-by-side with Planned Parenthood as we fight to expand health care access and equity, as well as protect a person’s right to make decisions about their own bodies, including abortion,” said Jodi Hicks, CEO & President of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California. “PPAC is proud to endorse him as a lifelong advocate for consumers and look forward to working with him in the coming years to protect and expand access to health care services for all.”

“Based on his track record in the Legislature and as our Insurance Commissioner, and his personal story growing up as a son of immigrants, I know that Ricardo will stand up against hate and discrimination in all its forms – which is more important now than ever as the AAPI community continues to face a wave of xenophobic hate,” said Judy Chu, U.S. Representative, District 27.

“Democrats from across California have put their support behind Commissioner Lara because HE is the candidate who has lived our Democratic values,” said María Elena Durazo, California State Senator, SD 24.

“Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has been a strong advocate for criminal justice reforms and has worked to confront the racial disparities that exist throughout our society,” said Holly Mitchell, Los Angeles County Supervisor, 2nd District. “I’m proud to endorse the state’s first LGBTQ and Latino Insurance Commissioner and look forward to continuing to work with him to advance our shared values. Ricardo Lara is someone who leads by example and I’m proud to endorse his re-election campaign.”

Commissioner Lara has been a leading voice for expanding health care to all Californians, including advocating for ground-breaking legislation that will allow workers to cover their elderly parents on individual insurance policies. He also wrote legislation that would create a single-payer health care system for California.

They join the California Democratic Party and an extensive coalition of activists, organizations, and Democratic leaders from across the state supporting the Insurance Commissioner’s re-election campaign.
