CHIRLA Action Fund Joins California Leaders and Advocacy Organizations In Support of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara For Re-election

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Ricardo Lara for Insurance Commissioner Campaign is proud to announce an endorsement from the CHIRLA Action Fund. The organization advocates for the full inclusion of immigrant families in California and fights to preserve education, human services, and civil rights. CHIRLA Action Fund joins United Farm Workers of America and an extensive coalition of activists, organizations, and Democratic leaders from across the state supporting the Insurance Commissioner’s re-election campaign.

Lara is an unequivocal supporter of immigrant rights. He is the son of a Fresno farm laborer who spent years doing backbreaking work in the fields to ensure a better life for their family.

“Commissioner Ricardo Lara works for full inclusion of immigrant families in California,” said Angelica Salas, President of the CHIRLA Action Fund. “As insurance commissioner, Lara supported a bill to more closely regulate private immigration prisons in California by requiring them to get more insurance. It is one more step to curtail the indiscriminate power of these corporations in the state. Also, as the first openly gay person elected to statewide office in the Legislature, he also authored a single-payer health care act, Health4AllKids, that now covers all children in California with full-scope Medi-Cal. We’re proud to support this steadfast ally in his campaign for re-election.”

Commissioner Lara has also been a leading voice for expanding health care to all Californians, including advocating for ground-breaking legislation that will allow workers to cover their elderly parents on individual insurance policies.

Lara is the first LGBTQ person elected to statewide office ever in California history and the first Latino Insurance Commissioner.
