“Throughout his career, Commissioner Lara has shattered long-standing political barriers for LGBTQ and Latinx people and redefined what is possible for an LGBTQ Californian with a desire to serve. As Insurance Commissioner, he’s been a leading voice for expanding healthcare to all Californians and a chief advocate for groundbreaking legislation that protects patients who are HIV-positive. His policy positions are shaped by his experiences as an LGBTQ Latino and it is evident in the commitment he brings to his work every day. LGBTQ Victory Fund is proud to endorse Commissioner Lara for reelection and we are confident California voters will be proud to vote for him in 2022.” – Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Fund

With many Californians left reeling in the wake of devastating wildfires, Commissioner Lara has fought for fire victims as they try to rebuild their lives.  Lara protected more than 2.4 million policyholders from non-renewal following declared wildfire disasters in 2019. He also created the nation’s first Climate & Sustainability branch within the Department of Insurance.

Commissioner Lara has also been a leading voice for expanding health care to all Californians, including advocating for ground-breaking legislation that will allow workers to cover their elderly parents on individual insurance policies.
