A Statement From Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara on Draft U.S. Supreme Court Opinion

LOS ANGELES, CA – Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara issued the statement below today regarding the leaked draft U.S. Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade:

“As California’s Insurance Commissioner, I stand with Planned Parenthood and other providers in our efforts to keep abortion legal and safe. Californians will not turn back the clock on women’s rights, and in our state, we will not allow Trump-appointed Supreme Court Justices to create a dystopian society where women have no say over what happens to their own bodies. There is no more critical time to make our voices heard loud and clear: Abortion is essential healthcare and women’s health must be protected.”

Commissioner Lara is supportive of the proposed amendment to enshrine the right to abortion in our state constitution. Commissioner Lara has been a leading voice for expanding health care to all Californians, including advocating for ground-breaking legislation that will allow workers to cover their elderly parents on individual insurance policies. He also wrote legislation that would create a single-payer health care system for California.

Lara is the only candidate for Insurance Commissioner endorsed by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC).
